So Ludo fills a niche genre in music that I usually don't listen to. However where bands like Panic at the Disco, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, etc have never begged repeat listens... ludo always makes me come back. So I guess they are currently my "power-pop-rock" choice. I Like them for a whole bunch of reasons, their music is clean and straightforward... it's not re-writing any norms, and that's important. The lyrics however are a different story. Nearly every song is laced with a sarcasm and wit that pokes fun at themselves and everyone else. I've always loved when a band knows when to take themselves seriously, and when to not. Ludo walks that very thin line through every verse, hook, and bridge. I'd also encourage looking into the Broken Bride EP... it's a story album about time traveling to try and save a dead lover... there's songs about fighting undead armies and pterodactyls. It's awesome. So this song is off of the record "You're Awful, I Love You" and it's great... it's not even the highlight of the record, but right now it's my favorite, and it's the first song I heard off the album.

It's a good thing songs like this keep coming along for me... I don't know what I'd do without it.
I might explode into a murderous rage and kill the first 13 people I see. I might dissolve into a thin dust and coat everything in my room. I might fall asleep... forever... and never wake up.
Instead I listen to this song, over and over, and it keeps me right there on the edge of sanity. Thanks Page France... I owe you one.

I've been picking songs very slowly for this mix I'm working on inspired by the last Menomena post. The mix is called "Dear God: Take Notes..." and it's going to be really good. The songs on this mix have lyrics that line up with the premonition I have of what is coming, or are significantly appropriate for how I feel right now.
The general idea is that things are changing for me and I feel it, I felt this way last February and I'd missed this ambition and restlessness. I'm afraid that I'm callousing romantically, but I think that everyone feels like that while they are alone.
I'm hoping that during the process of picking songs and weeding them out, I'll find a conclusion that is more optimistic. I've only used mixtape making as a form of therapy on two other occasions, neither of which were this calculated.

I swear that Menomena is the music I want to hear all the time right now. This song is foreshadowing... I can feel it.
I'm waiting for the rest of them to come together over me, all the songs that will tell me the future. Once I do, I'll have a prophetic mix tape on my hands and I'll pass it on to God to make sure he gets it right.

I'd stopped doing this after failing to complete my "best of 2006" marathon back in Jan. But I've decided to pick it back up again, and this song was my motivation for it. I heard it while getting coffee at The Coffee Bean and asked who it was, then I posted a livejournal voicepost to remind me to download it. I've yet to really give the rest of the album a listen, but I love this track. Seriously, so smooth.

The Elected - Sun, Sun, Sun
(yay! I'm finally caught up on these... *sigh* feels good. ok on to the album...)
I know a lot of people felt that the songs Blake wrote for Rilo Kiley were weak, but they were often times my favorites, and they all had a certain charm that really appealed to me. I found out about The Elected nearly on accident, I was going to see The Colour open for The Elected and Eisley (The Colour being my main reason for going). And when I looked into the other opening band to see what they were like, I found out that it was a side project of Blake's.
I'm really glad my introduction to them was live, it would be really difficult to explain what it is that doesn't get captured on record, but if you ever get a chance to see them preform, do it. Since then, I've seen The Elected play live more times than any other band, and had a blast every time.
Their debut was good, but I never attached myself to it the way I did Sun Sun Sun. I love this record, and because I have a lot of memories of live shows attached to each song, the album means that much more to me. If you are an audiophile and can acquire it on Vinyl do it, it sounds really good that way.
